How I Make Photo Shoots Fun For Young Children!
1- Build Rapport and Set Expectations.
I will introduce myself to everyone and engage in conversation to build rapport and trust.
-’Do you guys like bubbles’?
-’I heard you are a great dancer!’
I’ll also give a brief summary of what to expect for the photos (whole family, mummy and daddy, each child, all the girls/boys, etc).
2- Allow Choice-Making.
I give children the chance to make their own decisions where possible to give a sense of choice and control.
-’Do you want to hold mummy’s hand or daddy’s hand?’
-’Can you choose a tree to stand in front of for the next photo?’
3- BUBBLES!
Everyone loves bubbles and for photos it usually creates natural joyous expressions!
Allows parents to be involved (they can blow bubbles while I take photos!)
They look amazing in photos
A good chance for kids to run around and burn some energy!
4- Create Curiousity
I’ll create opportunities for curiousity where possible.
-’Guess what I’ve got in my bag for you!’ (bubbles)
-’What happens if I stand on this rock to take a photo? Do you think I’ll fall off?’
-’Ooh, I wonder what’s behind that tree?’
5- Use the Children’s Interests
Asking the children what they like and using their answer as a prompt works well.
-’Ok, on the count of 3 everyone say BLUEY!!’
I also attempt to have little characters to attach to the top of my camera to encourage eye contact!
6- Give Responsibility
Children often love to feel helpful, so I may create opportunities for them to be so.
-’Can you bring my camera bag over here please?’
-’I need to go and pick some flowers for mummy!’
-’Could you please hold baby brother’s hand while I take a photo of mummy and daddy?’
7- Movement Breaks
No one wants to pose for 30 minutes straight!
I give children (and adults!) little pockets of time to move around.
-’Who loves spinning? Let’s take some spinning photos!’
-’You want to climb the tree? Sweet- I’ll take photos of you up there!
-’I’ll race you to that bench!’
8- Lollipops!
With parent’s prior consent, all kids will get to choose a lollipop when the photos are finished being taken.
These can be used if needed to encourage children to participate in photos- the promise of a lollipop!
